A French grisaille painting of horizontal format from the early 19th century. This French grisaille painting features a scene reminiscent of French sculptor Jean-Baptiste Pigalle's 1750s 'Infant with a Cage'. Three chubby cherubs surrounding an empty cage are trying to catch a bird who is happily flying away. The fourth one, depicted on the right side under a tree, is holding his head, crying. The monochrome grisaille technique, featuring the use of grey tones, allowed the artist to imitate sculpture, creating a lovely trompe-l'œil effect. With its lively scene inspired by the Rococo period, this French grisaille painting circa 1820 will decorate any wall beautifully.
