SOLD - French Bronze 1900s Bouillotte Table Lamp with Swan Heads and Green Metal Shade

SOLD - A French turn of the century bronze three-light bouillotte table lamp from the early 20th century with swan-themed arms and dark green painted sheet metal shade with golden frieze. Created in France during the Turn of the Century which saw the transition from the 19th to the 20th, this "lampe bouillotte" as it is called in French captures our attention with its bronze structure and décorative motifs. The term bouillotte comes from the card game of the same name (a version of the poker) which became extremely popular in France during the late 18th century. A bouillotte table on which the game was played is round in shape. It was originally adorned with torches, which became lamps after a while. These lamps typically had three arms and their shades, usually made of tôle, were adjustable to be closer to the candles so that a subdued light would be diffused. In the case of your lamp, the shade is made of a green painted sheet metal, adjustable thanks to a little arrow-themed screw. The sconces, also adjustable, showcase three slender swans giving birth to the scrolling arms supporting the bobèches and their candle sleeves. The ensemble is connected to an ovoid section with crosshatch motifs, resting in the lower bowl. This circular bowl was destined to receive tokens for the staff after each game. The lamp has been professionally rewired for the US and is ready to be plugged. With its elegant décor and golden bronze finish, this French bouillotte table lamp circa 1900 will make for a lovely addition to any home!
