SOLD: Pair of French 1900s Bronze Bouillotte Lamps with Candelabras and Tôle Shades

SOLD: A pair of French turn of the century bronze three-light bouillotte table lamps from the early 20th century with scrolling arms, gadroon motifs and black painted tôle shades. Created in France during the Turn of the Century which saw the transition from the 19th to the 20th, each of this pair of "lampes bouillottes" as they are called in French captures our attention with its bronze structure and scrolling lines. The term bouillotte comes from the card game of the same name (a version of the poker) which became extremely popular in France during the late 18th century. A bouillotte table on which the game was played is round in shape. It was originally adorned with torches, which became lamps after a while. These lamps typically had three arms and their shades, usually made of tôle, were adjustable to be closer to the candles so that a subdued light would be diffused. In the case of our lamps, the shades are made of tôle painted in a black color, adjustable thanks to a little screw. The two lamps are identical, the only difference is inside the lampshades, one is painted, the other is not. The candelabras showcase three scrolling arms supporting the gadroon-accented bobèches and their candle sleeves. The ensemble is resting on a circular base. The lamps have been professionally rewired for the US and are ready to be plugged. With their elegant lines and golden bronze finish, this pair of French bouillotte table lamps circa 1900 will make for a lovely addition to any home!.
