A French Rococo needlepoint firescreen from the 18th century with scrolling wooden base and mythological theme. Born in France during the 18th century, this firescreen features an exquisite needlepoint work, depicting a pastoral scene: two elegantly dressed ladies are picking up flowers and wheat. The figure on the left, is holding a sickle, carrying wheat in her left arm while the one on the right is holding a garland of flowers. We seem to be in the presence of Ceres and Flora, the Greco-Roman mythological goddesses of summer and spring, who are floating elegantly above the ground. This scene is secured with nailheads and set within a wooden frame resting on a reeded scrolling base with cross stretcher. With its elegant Rococo lines and lovely depiction, this French 18th century firescreen will bring a touch of elegance to any living room or bedroom.
