SOLD - Swedish Neoclassical 1800s Painted Wood Sofa with Scrollwork and Waterleaves

A Swedish neoclassical painted wood sofa bench from the early 19th century, with scrollwork design, lions, beads, waterleaf motifs and new upholstery. Born in the early years of the 19th century during the Gustavian era, this exquisite painted sofa features a straight wooden back, topped with a rectangular panel presenting a delicate scrollwork motif and petite beads. The tall wooden arms are topped with foliage-carved finials, and accented with guilloche motifs as well as lion heads carved in low-relief. The long, rectangular seat has been reupholstered with a simple linen fabric, whose neutral color complements the soft grey hue of the piece beautifully. This light painted finish, typical of the Scandinavian taste, reveals the desire to brighten up the homes of Sweden during the long and dark winters. The sofa is raised on six elegant feet, adorned with elongated waterleaf motifs echoing the skirt, and are accented with additional lion heads on the knees. With its clean lines and lovely neoclassical décor, this Swedish sofa bench circa 1800 will bring a touch of calm elegance to any home. The seat is 24 inches deep.
