SOLD - Pair of Swedish Gustavian Style Painted Three-Drawer Commodes, circa 1880

SOLD - A pair of Swedish Gustavian style painted wood three-drawer commodes from the late 19th century, with canted side posts and tapered feet. Born in Sweden during the later years of the 19th century, each of this pair of painted chests features a rectangular top with neoclassical carved frieze and canted corners. The façade is made of three drawers fitted with classical brass hardware, flanked with canted sides posts adorned with simply carved cartouches. Each commode is raised on four short tapered feet, angled in the front in typical Gustavian manner. The commodes are painted in a soft color, typical of the Scandinavian taste for light palettes, aiming at brightening the homes of Sweden during the long, dark winters. With its clean lines and understated décor, this pair of Swedish 1880s painted commodes will bring a touch of classical elegance to any home, whether placed in a bedroom, foyer or living room.
