SOLD - French Faux-Bamboo Bed, circa 1870 with Custom-Made Mattress

SOLD - A French faux bamboo bed from the second half of the 19th century with custom mattress. This French bed was born in the later years of the reign of Emperor Napoleon III, at a time when France was entering its third republic after its defeat in the Franco-Prussian war. Featuring an exquisite faux-bamboo frame, the bed is adorned with simply recessed panels. The headboard however, attracts all the attention with its triangular frame that could bring the pediments of ancient Greek temples to mind. The upper rails cross one another at the crest forming an x shape, while a delicate faux-bamboo trim is arranged in an intricate design below. These geometrical motifs are reprised and developed on the footboard, creating a perfect visual harmony. The ensemble, raised on four toupie feet, comprises a custom-made mattress. With its unusual yet elegant silhouette and lovely faux bamboo structure, this French bed circa 1870 will be an excellent addition to any bedroom.
