SOLD - French 19th Century Oil on Board Landscape Painting, the Garden with a Bench

A French framed oil on board landscape painting from the late 19th century, depicting a garden with a bench. Born in France during the ever-changing 19th century, this medium size oil on board painting features a serene scene, representing a grouping of houses anchoring a garden with a single bench. The palette, mostly made of brown, green and blue grey tones, soothes our eyes with its calming colors while the short strokes remind us of the Impressionist facture. The artist plays subtly with light and shadows that accentuate the houses' roofs and garden beautifully. The bench in the foreground, placed at an angle, draws us in. The diagonals of the tall trees give depth to the piece and are balanced by the horizontality of the dirt path that receives all the light. Given as a wedding gift to the artist's cousin (as noted on the back side), this painting is set inside a carved grey painted frame showing nice aging. With its small proportions and Impressionist technique, this late 19th century oil painting will be a lovely decorative choice, perhaps placed above a side table, commode or bergère chair.
