SOLD - Pair of Swedish Gustavian Style Painted Wood Three-Drawer Commodes circa 1880

A pair of Swedish Gustavian style painted wood three-drawer commodes from the late 19th century. Each of this pair of Swedish chests-of-drawers features a rectangular top with chamfered corners in the front over three dovetailed drawers. In typical Gustavian manner, an understated simplicity of the décor is combined with pure, clean lines. Each drawer is adorned with geometrical motifs framing a central circular medallion. The fluted side posts, following the direction of the top, are angled along with the front legs. The light colored finish is typical of the Scandinavian taste for a more pastel palette, thus allowing the Swedes to brighten up their rooms during the long dark winters. Their discreet elegance and pure lines make this pair of Swedish 1880s Gustavian style commodes an excellent choice for any room, perhaps used as tall nightstand tables or anchoring a living room.
