SOLD - English Victorian Papier-Mâché Tray with Hand-Painted King Charles Spaniel Dog

A small English Victorian era papier-mâché tray from the mid-19th century with hand-painted King Charles Spaniel and mother-of-pearl inlay. This exquisite English tray features, on a black background accented with gilded foliage and mother-of-pearl inlay, the depiction of a King Charles Spaniel dog. Undoubtedly inspired by Queen Victoria's first beloved dog Dash, England experienced in the 19th century a deep fondness for canine representations, particularly spaniel figures. The russet color of the dog's coat, perfectly echoed by the gilded accents, stands out beautifully on the deep blue background. With its rich palette and lovely décor, this petite papier-mâché tray circa 1860 will bring a wonderful decorative touch to any room, perhaps placed on a table top or on a chest-of-drawers.
