Born in the French southeastern Dauphiné area at the end of the reign of King Louis Philippe, this walnut panetière (translating as bread box in English) features a silhouette typical of the last king of France's era. A large molded cornice sits atop a calm yet elegant façade, marked in its centre with a central door flanked with spindle balusters and openwork panels. This door is adorned with an exquisite openwork design and opens thanks to a wooden pull to reveal two inner shelves offering a convenient storage compartment, originally dedicated to receiving loaves of bread. The door's openwork motifs are delicately echoed on the thin horizontal panels that run through the three sides. The side panels are accented by the rhythmic presence of two levels of spindle-shaped balusters. The ensemble is raised on four wraparound block feet.
